The material SrCu2(BO3)2 is a remarkable realization of the exactly solvable Shastry Sutherland model. In this model, an interplay between square lattice and diagonal exchange interactions yields an intriguing realization of a ground state in which the triplets are arranged in patterns that cover a fraction of the crystal lattice.
We discovered by magnetic field tuning that the magnetization of SrCu2(BO3)2 exhibits plateaus at all integer fractions of the saturation magnetisation, displaying remarkable physics analogous to the Quantum Hall Effect for electrons.
